Full bladder ends police pursuit

A man who led police on a 45-kilometre pursuit round the Nelson region at the weekend was forced to give himself up to take a toilet stop. 

The 31-year-old Reefton man ignored a police request to stop on Rocks Rd, Nelson, at 3.40am on Saturday, Sergeant Blair Hall told The Nelson Mail. 

Three police vehicles pursued the car to Kohatu, southwest of Nelson where the man stopped. 

"The man stopped because his bladder was full and he could not carry on," Mr Hall said. 

He was charged with dangerous driving and failing to stop for police, with further drink-driving charges likely to be laid.

That's exactly what I thought. But some people were so rigidly potty trained!

In a situation like that I wonder if the guy made it to a bathroom in time, or maybe if the police let him pee on the side of the road. I've had a couple friends arrested for DUI who had to pee bad when they were pulled over and who ended up wetting themselves because of the delay involved in testing them and getting back to the jail. One guy was a jerk to the cop and he handcufffed him and ignored his desperation-- they even mentioned at his court hearing how he was "incontinent" as further proof of excessive drinking. But another friend had the misfortune of being pulled over on a busy highway in daylight-- there was no place they could let him pee without it resulting in "indecent exposure". The cop was quite apologetic to him as he wet himself.

I love those accounts. Do you know in what circumstances the two friends actually wet themselves? Was it at the scene where they were stopped, or while being transported to where the charges would be processed? If it was the latter case I guess they must have made a mess in the police vehicles, right?

I have read in the news that a fellow had his breathalyzer test at the police department invalidated because he needed to urinate and the police wouldn't let him go prior to the test. Apparently the judge subscribed to the theory that an overfull bladder will give a false reading.
