It happened when I was 21.
We created a new scientific circle at our department, so we decided to celebrate this fact. We went to the bar where we drank a couple of beers. As you know, beer makes people very quickly want to pee. My problem is that I really hate to go to public toilets, so I usually keep pee until I get home and I can calmly take a piss. After 2nd beer I started to feel a strong need to piss, but I was too ashamed to leave the table and go because there was people I’ve just met and no one else went to the toilet. For my misfortune I got seat in front of the toilet, where I could see guys who went there to empty their bladders. I tried to break the shame and stand up to the bathroom, but still my shyness was stronger, so I sat about an hour with painful and full of piss bladder. Because of my shyness I could only sit and envy the guys who are not ashamed to pee in public. I began to dream that the meeting was over, I was wondering how much longer I can hold, because the situation began to be really serious. Finally I heard the magical word that we are going back to our homes.
When we left the bar I realized that I won’t be going alone to the bus stop but with these people. When we got to the bus stop, I knew I couldn’t hold my pee to the house and threat of peeing pants in front of people on the bus became real. Out of fear, I gave up the bus and decided to return home on foot (about half an hour). I was hoping that I would find some dark place without people and pee there because it was really hard to walk and I had to hold my cock through my pockets, but at the same time I didn’t want to look desperate. The longer I walked, the more hurt my bladder and I could fell pee on the tip of my penis.
The worst part was that the lanterns shone everywhere and people went, and I was too shy to approach the fence, took out the penis from boxers and start to pee. On the way I came to the red light, which for a long time does not change, and there was next to me cyclist who was waiting for green light with me , so I could not openly show how much I needed to pee. The worst began immediately afterwards. I already knew that there is a chance that I'll get home dry, so I turned into an estate and was looking bushes and dark place. I came to the parking lot, where lights were dim and made sure no one is in cars. I had no choice - I pee there or I'll pee in my pants.
With shaking hands I took my penis out from trousers and started to pee when suddenly I saw the older woman with the dog! Immediately I stopped peeing, so she didn’t notice what I was doing. I quickened my step and my penis stiffened and bladder itself began to empty into my pants. I was lucky that I was wearing black jeans. I peed my whole boxers, trousers and socks and came back finally came to the house.
Having a shy bladder isn't comfortable guys.
Sorry for my mistakes (I hope there isn’t a lot) in English but I wanted to share my story with you.

I reckon more lads of that age than we imagine would relate to what you describe.

There are websites that deal with just this problem, and the subject comes up in others, so it's a common one. Some men who are pee-shy manage to relieve themselves at a public rest room in an emergency, but with considerable discomfort. Others just plain can't, and it certainly affects their social lives and even their livelihoods. I have great sympathy.

Of course I love this but hate it too. I love guys needing to pee and trying to hold it while everyone around knows they need a pee like crazy. My pee buddy is like this.
I can imagine your angst only from the needing urgently to pee and no where to go. Very hard

Re: Shy bladder consequences
I was similarly shy of going to pee in front of people when I was that age, still am a bit, and I really relate to your detailed description. It reminds me of an incident when I was 20. I had just made some new friends, we had all been out together to a community centre where we had each had a large mug of coffee, and I just couldn't bring myself to go to pee while we were there even though I was getting pretty desperate. And just like in your account, we were all going back on the bus afterwards. If any of my friends had gone to pee before we all left then I would have done, but they didn't.
So I just tagged on with everyone as we walked to the bus. Even as we approached the bus station there was a public toilet right there, but I couldn't go in even though I was desperate. The others were walking past it and I couldn't bring myself to call out to them and ask them to wait. And then, unlike you, I actually got on the bus with them, paid the bus fare and sat down. But then, while the bus was still waiting, I knew I couldn't wait any longer, and I had to get off the bus again. My friends were really surprised, and I was incredibly embarrassed, but the fact that I knew I would wet myself if I stayed seated forced me to leave them and let them go back home without me. I ran back to the toilets which we had passed and used them. So I made it - another difference with you. But I was so embarrassed about it afterwards.
The other commenters above are undoubtedly correct - shy bladder syndrome is definitely a common problem.

Re: Shy bladder consequences
My pee buddy and I have these conversations daily.
As we get older we do loosen up a bit and just sod the rest and go when we need.
I wish I knew why or what happens to people to be shy saying they need the loo or just excusing themselves. I do it myself too; especially at work I pray I'm not the first one to need to pee.
My pee buddy is an enigma. Last time he was fidgeting badly that in the end I asked if I needed to find somewhere to stop sooner. (It's a little fake as we meet for pee fun) but by the time he finally admitted he needed to go badly we were near our destination and then he was nagging me to be quick. He went pee and you know the breaking the seal well we sat with coffee and suddenly I realised he was dying to pee again. I questioned him and he said no then yes. His face and fidgeting giving him away.
He really hates anyone knowing he needs to go even me.
As a recap; the first time we met he wet himself as he asked me if he could go use my toilet when he was starting in his pants as too shy before. I said I'd show him where the loo was in a sec (pretending I was unaware of his urgency) and basically he was dribbling in to his trousers. Thank goodness for washing machines and tumble dryers.

Re: Shy bladder consequences
I feel horrible for everyone who has to go through this but I'm also very thankful to everyone who tells me about it!
I can't relate as such, I could pee in your hand and not worry about it but I'm aware that it is very common for people to feel shy about peeing. I used to have a friend that never peed when we were out together, whether it was just us or with a group of friends. I wondered for a long time if he was pee shy or just had a bladder the size of a watermelon. It turned out eventually that it was the latter though
