How much water do you really need to drink daily?

Today, the NAM recommends letting thirst guide your water consumption habits, but set an even higher volume of daily water intake: 3.7 liters (15 cups) for the average adult male and 2.7 liters (11 cups) for the average adult female. Aug 21, 2017

I found this on my hard drive, having downloaded it some time ago. Although we know that a one-liter bladder capacity is not that unusual, most published maximum capacities give the average as 400-600mL. If you round up a man's quota to 4 liters and assume it's consumed steadily throughout the day, that means he'd need to pee eight times a day, or every two hours of his waking period.

We know that some occupations, police officers on duty for example, do not provide access to a toilet for more than two hours at a time. If everyone followed the recommendation, we'd have a lot of guys desperate for a wee!
