That's the problem with sports... you can get so urgent and thirsty at the same time that you desperately want to attend to both needs concurrently.

His need to pee was urgent enough to take a break, though 45 seconds isn't enough to evacuate a large bladder. Apparently it wasn't so urgent that he couldn't take a quick swig and presumably resume playing. He's probably played with a full bladder before and figures he can hold it.

When you're going to be talking for over an hour you need to be well hydrated to keep your vocal chords lubricated. (There are tales from actors who have had the same problem.) This is an athletic guy who no doubt has confidence in his ability to hold his bladder, and although the podcast was reaching the end, he was in a hurry to hustle off camera!
